Privacy Policy

This policy describes information processed during a visit, why it is used, and the limited circumstances in which another party may receive it. Continued use of Dane County Criminal History means that you accept these practices.

Data You Give Us Directly

Search Queries

A name or place entered in a search tool is sent to the outside provider operating that tool. The provider processes the request and returns its result. We do not keep or log those search words on our systems.

Messages and Contact Submissions

When you email us, we retain the message long enough to respond and manage the exchange. It is not shared outside our organization unless disclosure is legally required.

Data We Gather Automatically

Our systems may receive routine technical details when a page loads:

  • Your device's IP address
  • Browser name and version
  • Operating system and device category
  • Pages viewed and time spent on them
  • A referring website, when supplied
  • The time of each request

Cookies and Analytics

Cookies and analytics help measure traffic, popular pages, and where visits end. A browser can block cookies, although some functions may then work differently. Analytics providers combine and evaluate usage data under their own terms.

What We Do With This Data

  • Operate the service and improve load performance
  • Pass search inputs to the selected partner tool
  • Measure which resources visitors use
  • Find and repair technical faults
  • Display advertising that may reflect visitor interests

No Criminal-Record Data on File

We do not build, keep, or sell a database of personal criminal records. Dane County material remains with offices such as the Sheriff's Records Section, Wisconsin Circuit Court, Wisconsin Department of Justice Crime Information Bureau, Wisconsin DOC, and Wisconsin Public Sex Offender Registry. Wisconsin's repository and reporting framework appears in Wis. Stat. §165.83 and §165.84. Visitor data is not assembled into a consumer report or a dossier about another person. This site is not a consumer reporting agency under the FCRA.

Third-Party Search Partners

An outside company powers each partner search box. Its privacy terms, retention rules, and sharing choices apply to information entered there. We do not control those practices. Review the provider's policy before submitting any query.

Links to Other Websites

Links may lead to Dane County offices, Wisconsin courts and agencies, or outside services. Once you leave, the destination's privacy policy controls the visit. Read that policy before supplying personal details.

Advertising services may use their own systems to measure activity across websites and select ads. We do not operate that tracking infrastructure.

Who Might See Your Data

We do not sell personal information. Data may still reach limited service categories:

  • A search provider handling a query you choose to submit
  • Analytics companies measuring performance and traffic
  • Advertising networks serving content on the site
  • A government authority acting under a valid legal demand

How We Protect Your Data

Reasonable, standard safeguards are used for information under our control. No internet service can guarantee perfect security, so we cannot promise that unauthorized access or a breach will never occur.

Users Under 18

The site is intended for adults, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from a child under 18. If such data is identified, we will remove it.

Your Data Rights

Rights can vary with a visitor's location and the law that applies. The Wisconsin Public Records Law, Wis. Stat. §§19.31 through 19.39, governs records held by Wisconsin authorities rather than turning this private resource into a public custodian. Subject to applicable law, you may:

  • Request access to personal information held about you
  • Ask that inaccurate information be corrected
  • Seek deletion where the law permits it
  • Opt out of eligible forms of processing

Updates to This Policy

We may revise this policy as practices or legal duties change. A new version becomes available here with its updated effective date.
